Fleeting Sunsets

For those who tune into the fading sun a few weeks before the Winter Solstice, those brilliant skies scatter saturated hues across the horizon almost daily, or at least here in the Mid-Atlantic. My usual thinking is that the January skies and sunsets are typically the best in the business, but December 2025 has not disappointed. Depending on where I am in the house when the show starts, I sometimes do a double-take of what I’m seeing due West. And since these brilliant sunsets are so fleeting, I like to stop, stare in wonder, and run outside to take a few photos.

At this time of year, it’s not those long, lingering sunsets that fade slowly into darkness. Nope, it’s more like a quick-action light switch, going from brilliant pink-orange-yellow to ink-black in a nanosecond.

I never want to take these fleeting works of art for granted. I want to slow my day down to capture these colorful moments not only on my iPhone camera, but also in my mind, seared across all the other thoughts that are ruminating in my head. It’s that calm the sunset returns to my soul that is the greatest pleasure of all.
