It was Beautiful, The Carole King Musical

Are you a fan of Carole King and her iconic music? I certainly am. I wore out two of her Tapestry vinyl albums between the 1970s and 1980s. But there is something magical when her music is shared through Beautiful, The Carole King Musical, especially under the stars at the Annapolis Summer Garden Theater. I was invited by my friend, Sharon Sands-Gregory, and we had a delightful evening enjoying the night and music that filtered throughout downtown Annapolis, Maryland.

Carole King’s incredible body of work in music and lyrics is spellbinding. Her insatiable appetite to play piano and write songs led her on an unbelievable mission to change the face of contemporary music, all beginning when she was just 16 years old. Many of her hits remain as Top 40 staples to this day. She is still celebrated for collaborating with her then-husband, Gerry Goffin, and friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, along with African American artists on music and lyrics in the pop industry. Think Shirrelles, The Drifters, James Taylor, The Beatles, Aretha Franklin, and many more who sang her songs and defined a musical style loved the world over.

In 2018, I saw the same Broadway production in Washington, D. C., with my friend, Wendy Allen. It was a cold December night, but the songs and music of Carole King warmed us right up that we never noticed the cold biting wind while walking back to the parking garage.

Ms. King, now 84, has a brilliant legacy for future generations that may find her music endearing and sing-along while driving down country roads or cleaning the house!

The songs from last night are still an earworm for me today: “So Far Away,” “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” and “You’ve Got a Friend.”
