When my quilting bee-mate, Debbi Carter, revealed a quilt that she made for her uncle several months ago, I knew I had to make one for "The Best Daughter" and her family. The only trepidation I had about making this quilt was the paper-pieced black lab that sits in the middle. I can do almost everything in the quilting world, but I'm on the struggle bus when it comes to paper piecing. I get all twisted up with where to put the next piece and so on. Oh, I've tried, believe me. Debbi said she would help me paper-piece the lab and even offered me the pattern to try. I politely declined then, as I had other projects on my list, and wanted to give myself ample time to figure it out toward the end of the year.
Late summer, while at a bee, Debbi handed me a little "package." I jumped for joy and gave her a big hug after I opened the folded black lab center block! She said it was "no big deal" to make a second one, since she still had all the fabric and the pattern was fresh in her mind, even though I'd declined it earlier. During our guild retreat in November 2025, I finished the rest of the quilt top using ROY G BIV ombré cotton (and soft) fabrics. Not long after I got home, I long-arm quilted it and thought about giving it to the Hudson family for Christmas. However, since we hosted Thanksgiving, I decided to give it to them then, much to their surprise and delight.
Today, Disco is four years old! I've seen her sneak onto the quilt both back in November at our house and, of course, at their house. I just had to name this quilt: Disco-Ball-Girl! Notice the tennis ball in the lower-right corner of the lab square.
