West River, Maryland- Quilt Retreat 2026 - Day 2
This may be the first time in 25 years of retreating that I am taking my time working on each project that I brought to work on. My typical day is frantically sewing a quilt top or other project to finish, then get to the next thing.
The pace I thought I’d want to try out before this retreat gave me time to circle the room, check what my sewing sisters are working on, getting a snack (so many goodies!), and catching up with some gals that I don’t see except on retreats since they either live out of state, or several counties away.
One community effort our guild works on throughout the year (many quilt guilds do too) is the Honor’s Salute, where we create Red/White/Blue quilts to give to veterans and other military personnel coming home from war or other military endeavors. It’s a worthwhile program that benefits so many who served our country with valor and are recognized by quilt guilds around the country.
The Southern Comforters of Bowie (my guild), is doing a run on blocks to make lots of R/W/B quilts to give away this holiday season. I spent a couple of hours making several to add to the pile!
By the end of this weekend, we should have enough blocks to make 4-6 quilts, hopefully more.
Here is one of my blocks, and then the whole lot up until a couple hours ago.
Some weekends are about finishing quilts. This one is about enjoying the process, celebrating friendships, and stitching a little sunshine into quilts that will eventually warm the hearts of those who served. Veteran’s Day is coming up this week 11/11.
