If you follow the Chinese Zodiac, 2025 is the year of the snake. It’s not sad or crazy that 2025 marks the Year of the Snake, the sixth animal in the zodiac cycle. The Snake symbolizes wisdom, elegance, and intuition. It’s shedding the old whatever and bringing in the new and perhaps improved outlook, work schedule, or even love and friendships. Or how about Pandas? I love Panda Bears!
However, I don’t see anything about a Panda coming out of the 12 animals in the Chinese Zodiac. Hmmm.
The good news, though, is that China sent (2) Pandas to the Washington, D. C. Smithsonian’s National Zoo & Conservation Biology Zoo Institute. The bears made their public debut on January 24, 2025.
If there is any angst in your world due to the weather, news, or sports teams not making it to the next round that your favorite songs or a favorite scene from a movie, don’t shoo those thoughts away; maybe check out the Panda Cam could brighten your day/mood/state of mind. I’ve been checking on Bao Li and Qing Bao, both 3 years old, since their big splashy debut. Apparently, the cams are experiencing more traffic than usual, so if you check and don’t see them, check back later.
This is total cuteness overload, and I’m in for all the cuteness I can muster. I hope to get down to see them soon, too, and take a bunch of photos.
Over the last year, I’ve made a few Panda Quilts, forgetting that China was renewing its Panda breeding program in the US. Once I get the blocks back from my yearly Block Swap with a dozen of my sewing sisters, there will be one more to show! I think 2025 might be the year of the Panda (especially if watching the Panda Cam). According to ABC News, Bao Li and Qing Bao are emerging from quarantine and are now active and on 'display.' They are featured in the newly relaunched giant panda cam, as stated above, which consists of 40 cameras that will be operated live between the hours of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. ET.
First pic is Bao Bao I took at the National Zoo in April of 2014. He was sent back to China in 2017. We’ve been Panda-less since then! Yikes!
The second pic (middle) is a baby quilt for Ellie, and the third pic is the quilt I made last fall from a kit and hung in November at the Patuxent Wildlife Refuge Center in Laurel, Maryland.
