International Women's Day 2026

Is it only today, March 8, that we come together to celebrate and honor women? Every day could be more like it, and not just for the movers and shakers of our world, including Mother Teresa, Jackie Kennedy, Mary Cassette, Madame Curie, Rosa Parks, Eleanor Roosevelt, Maya Angelou, Cleopatra, and so many other unbelievable women through the centuries.

International Women’s Day came about after female workers fought for higher wages, better working conditions outside the home, as well as the right to vote in the early 1900s. At the second International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen in 1910, more than 100 women from 17 countries voted to create International Women’s Day.

But the fight for equality had to include housewives, nurses, teachers, and other “women’s” jobs that kept our families afloat and, hopefully, flourishing in the new era beyond our wildest dreams.

I’d love to shout out the achievements, large and small, to all my women friends from around the globe. Every single one of them has a purpose in their lives, with a varied cache of achievements that will never hit the “papers” but are just as special as those that do get the notoriety.

So yes, the calendar tells us today is International Women’s Day, but if you ask me, women deserve a standing ovation far more often than once a year. I’m grateful for the extraordinary women who shaped my life and history, and just as grateful for the incredible women I’m lucky to know personally: my daughter, my sisters, friends, other mothers and grandmothers, doctors, teachers, caregivers, creators, and quiet heroes whose good works ripple through the lives of others every single day. We are the heroines of our stories because we are nurturers and we care. A lot.

Thankfully, the world is brighter because of you. You keep manufacturing sunshine by supporting one another and your loved ones, and by doing the remarkable things that may never make the headlines—but make all the difference in an ever-changing world. You are the true Rock Stars!!! I'm raising my glass of water to each of you today, oops, every day!
