Day 11 of CCAM with Laura Murphy and Quilt Donation in Puerto Rico
First and foremost, I want to recognize that it’s been 25 years since 9/11. Our worlds changed on that fateful day, yet, as a nation, we rallied around the families that were affected most by the Twin Towers in NYC, the Pentagon in D.C., and a cornfield in Shanksville, PA. Those left behind still need support.
So much tragedy then that is still difficult to process. New Yorkers are still trying to “recover.”
When a little child is diagnosed with cancer, it’s tragic. Not like 9/11, there is nothing that can compare to that, but those lives are changed without a doubt.
Most people know I am a quilter. Not only do I quilt for pleasure, and making a few bucks with my T-shirt quilts, I also donate quilts, with my Southern Comforters Quilt Guild, around the world when I can.
Several years ago, a BGSU teammate and great friend, Laura Murphy, accompanied me to Puerto Rico to not only have a beach vacation, but to help me deliver quilts for the cancer kids at the San Juan Children’s Hospital.
That donation was our first order of business - delivering about 30 quilts to many sick Puerto Rican children, plus many US Soldiers stationed on PR with their sick children, all combined on the same floor of the massive hospital.
Before embarking on this endeavor, I worked with the hospital administrators, along with their Child Life staff to make the delivery happen.
We did the video on location in South Haven, Michigan. Laura shared for less than two minutes on her experience with me in PR, and the kids quilts (she does NOT like hospitals) we delivered. It was a stretch for her to go along with me to the hospital, though encouraged her that if she felt uncomfortable, I’d meet her back downstairs in less than an hour.)
She went with me.
We manufactured sunshine to the kids in that hospital that day.
