In twenty years, our childhood cancer parent network, taking advantage of a parent led weekend of several events, has gone from four or five couples to almost 40! I’m thrilled to see the growth of this “special” community, not only discussing difficult topics of our children’s lives (and siblings), but the laughter and fun we all have collectively over this quick weekend.
Saturday morning, Art Therapist, and a childhood cancer survivor who will turn 40 next month, Danielle Eichner, kicked off the morning with The Chain. She gave a list of questions and ideas to write on strips of colored paper to form a chain. First individually, then connecting with our partner, adding in the rest of our table mates, and then the entire group. I was so blown away with this exercise and the strength we passed on to our parents and caregivers to carry on no matter the load that we are carrying.
Gratitude, grace and gratefulness reigned supreme as we laughed and cried to hear what some of us wrote on our links. There was no pretentiousness, no explanation of ourselves, just pure emotional acceptance. That’s saying something.
Saturday night ended after a Rootin’ Tootin’ Boogie dance fest and good times for all! Dancing - being the catalyst to blow of any steam accumulated throughout the day.
