When we were planing this trip, I/we had no idea it was the Jubilee year for the Catholic church. Many pilgrims have come to Rome, not only to celebrate this milestone every 25 years, but to witness the conclave’s election of a new pope since Pope Francis died almost 2 weeks ago. Our guide pointed out the smoke stack that will be either black or white smoke in the coming days.
I’m writing this blog on a Train from Rome to Florence to Poggibonsi
Big Thrill for me today! Two Photos taken 30 years apart- 1995 & 2025 were the highlight for me.
I digress for a second. Today was also a shoe leather day, but nowhere near yesterday’s peak as we marched through the Rome Coliseum and the Forum (ancient ruins) for several hours.
Travel to Italy (and most every other country) since 1995 has changed significantly. Think 9/11, plane sizes, and over tourism. People have to pay to enter EVERY attraction, even the small ones. Sheesh .
My travel mates and me were happy with touring the Vatican museum and St. Peter’s Basilica (minus the Sistine Chapel due to the conclave starting today), yesterday, and the Coliseum and Ruins today.
The highlight for me was taking a photo in almost the same place that I had a photo taken in 1995.
As our guide, Roberto says, “Better now.”
bSoleille!
