The “Rogue Retreaters” are in full swing here at the Penn National Golf Club. There are only six of us using the facilities that no longer cater to golfers until early spring of 2025; snow was flying around the mountains on my two hour drive up (not sticking, thank goodness!). They rent it out to various groups on the off season, like quilt guilds. This is my last quilt retreat of the year. I’m working on several projects, with one specific one I’ll be working on all day tomorrow.
One of my favorite things about retreating is the dedicated time and effort I can put into my creativity without interruption (okay we stop for meals and snacks -hey, we have to keep the energy flowing). Plus, there are plenty of opinions on colors, placements and any other elements we may struggle with if we didn’t have each other. Everyone here has a great eye for quilting mastery, and I bask in their sincere suggestions when needed.
The quilt I worked on today I named: A Whitman (Herman) Sampler.” Two years ago guild member Margaret Herman passed away. Her daughters sold off their mother’s fabric and notions (there were plenty), and they gave me some of Margaret’s UFO’s (unfinished objects). They never wanted anything back even when I finished a couple of her quilts.
In 1997, a few months before I joined the local quilt guild, Margaret won the February BOMs (block of the month). Twenty-eight years have passed before, someone…me, took the (20) red and white blocks out of their bag to work on them into a quilt.
I’m not sure what I’ll do with it since most blocks have signatures of the block-makers (I know most of them, and some have passed away). I do know, though, there’s a home for it. Perhaps I’ll donate it to our spring quilt bingo, hospice, or a young lady diagnosed with cancer in a local hospital.
bSoleille!
