Williamsburg, Virginia — Jamestown! We are in the Area, so Why Not Go?
We did go and discovered that there are two Jamestown locations: Historic Jamestown and the Jamestown Settlement. The former is run by (or half of the place is run by) the National Park Service, which is the venue we chose to visit. The other half of the area, 22.5 acres of Jamestown Island is owned By a private nonprofit, Preservation Virginia, since 1889. An additional $15 was needed to enter for the “good stuff:” the James Fort, Church Tower, the on-going archaeological digs, several iconic statues (John Smith and Pocahontas, and the Archaearium Atchaeology Museum. Phew!
Plus, Julie Rains and I even bought our Senior Lifetime National Park Passes today! I promised myself I would buy my pass when I turned 62, but it never happened until one year and one day past 62. I’ll do the math: I’m a newly minted 63 plus one day old (when I bought my pass) and a new Senior National Park Pass Holder!
We were blessed to have such a nice sunny crisp fall day to enjoy these wonderful sites. It’s where our country and our democracy was in its infancy (they still had to bear a fight against the British in the 1700s). One cool thing that’s been on-going for several years is the archaeological digs and discoveries. They are finding all kind of interesting things, good and bad (bones and bodies).
On our way out of the one museum, I stopped to ask Laura, who was greeting the guests, about the ferry boats we saw going up and down the James River. She revealed that we can go on it, even a round trip excursion, all free of charge. Most delightful, she added, was to see the perspective of the Jamestown Colony from the boat, perhaps similar to the indentured servants and enslaved people landing on the shores of the banks.
Cool but sunny, we took her up on that info and ferried from Jamestown to Surrey. Since we traveled in a car, as soon as we got off, we did a u-turn and got in line to go back over (about a 20 minute ride each way). I really enjoyed the serendipitous journey.
