I’m Leaving on a Jet Plane!

Sunny and 60 degrees this morning ☀️. I wrote this post before leaving my apartment. I’m currently at the Athens airport waiting for my flight to Munich, and then onto Washington DC. I may be too tired once home to think about writing a post.

Thanks for following me on my trip! It was truly magical overall!

Here’s my early morning write ✍️;

But not for a few hours. I wanted to get in a short punchy post before my driver picks me up to whisk to the Athens Airport.

My driver, sweet Stefonos, is running 10 minutes late. That’s not a problem since I leave plenty of buffer between leaving and when my plane takes off.

So here are some musings I’ve noticed while here in Greece, more in Athens than Aegina, though my musings apply to both:

It’s November, and warm (between 60-75 degrees F), and I notice the down coats coming out on many people.

Everything goes for the fashion wise - from shorts and mini skirts and flipflops (how can they stand it with the incomprehensible barely walkable sidewalks and streets?) to blazers and “cruise clothes.” Brown is the color and on display in most every clothes shop.

Vaping and smoking are huge and menacing. The ugly smoke rings and more lingers for far too long…and truly, Athens does not need anymore smog!

It seemed to me that old(er) Greek men are quite rude. They never move when a lady is passing on a narrow walkway, and sometimes walk right into your path…ahem. This happened on many occasions, where I tried to politely move and say excuse me…nothing helped

.

Seeing the Acropolis anytime of day or night never tires. Think of all those math equations (geometry and physics) to create, move and make all those columns that fit like gloves - this being 2000-2500 year ago!).

Thankfully, restoration and excavation is all around Greece, but especially in Athens.

Food! The Mediterranean diet is in full force here. I had many Greek salads and they ALL were terrific. Plus, plenty of fresh fish (yes, even octopus). Everything I ate was delicious!

Phones: There is no worry in carrying a phone in any hand because everyone has a phone in their hand. Whether it’s using the map apps for directions, talking to a friend, calling up a taxi, or finding a good restaurant near where you are standing, it’s all good. Age does not matter when it comes to carrying a phone either, just saying. It’s part of our culture now, and I can’t live without mine.

Last(ing) thing, Graffiti. It’s ubiquitous. Some of it’s quite entertaining and vibrant, and some of it is not. A good resource here in Athens told me that it is art - of course it is - and it’s the art of the young people who are expressing themselves. Okay, then. I hope their art will never be on the Acropolis!

Bye bye 👋🏻 Athens! It’s been real. It’s been fun and I am thrilled to have visited this dynamic country!

bSoleille!
