Boo-Boo Bunny Funnies

Writer: Terri TomoffTerri Tomoff

I'll use this title to alert anyone wanting to join in the fun as I flesh out Boo-Boo Bunny stories. But before I start from Bunny's POV (point of view), there are some housekeeping and some backstories about plushies I'd like to squeeze out first.

Sometimes, all we have to do is ask. While working on the previously mentioned prompt, I recently contacted Jodie Smith (who bought the Good Night Moon book and accompanied Bunny for Ryan when he was born) about our Boo-Boo Bunny back story. Jodie got back to me in hearts (over spades, that is!). Violá! She remembered where she bought the combo, and there was also a story there. I am jumping for joy at a good start to this project.

I will eventually take liberties with the Boo-Boo Bunny's backstory, perhaps embellishing it to engage a reader, but I’m on to something. Our Bunny, or more aptly, Ryan's Bunny, is part of a larger story above and beyond the Goodnight Moon children’s book. The renamed Boo-Boo Bunny has some wild adventures beyond the moon and more!

Here is the texting conversation Jodie and I went back and forth on:

ME:

Jodie, when you bought Ryan’s Bunny and Good Night Moon book in 1994, were you in a store? Online? I’m writing a story about Boo Boo Bunny and want to start with the origin story of how he came to be Ryan’s first companion. Thanks (I hope you can remember!)! It’s been 30 years!

JODIE:

I am sure it was in a children’s bookstore called The Reading Railroad in Sylvania, Ohio. It was owned by two women, both named Marcia ( if I remember correctly). It was a treasured place for many in the community, hosting all of those things that bookstores do! I could spend hours in there with the children. They had a little reading nook that was like a train. We met a couple of our favorite and loved children’s authors there and, of course, got our books signed!!!

The store did go out of business in the way of having a brick-and-mortar location, BUT I stayed in touch with one of the Marcia’s, and she sold books out of her home in Sylvania. I would buy all of my nieces and nephews and good friends Christmas, birthday, and special occasion books from The Reading Railroad and then from Marcia in her home. Thank you for the journey down memory lane. I bet you did not expect that answer! Thank you for asking!

My mind is overflowing with ideas!

In the next few months, I aim to blog some stories about Boo-Boo Bunny and work in conjunction with my second book, Joy Ride Journeys! It's been in the garage for too long and needs to hit the open road for readers. I still can't see that wavering checkered flag in the distance, but that is my goal to do so.

Photo: This is Boo-Boo Bunny # 2, which Ryan gave to grandson Bodie this past Christmas. Between 1995 and 1997, when we witnessed how attached Ryan was to BBB # 1, we decided to get another one in case something happened to the first one. We were not fooling Ryan if we tried to swap out # 1 for # 2; he knew the difference.

Sigh.

I will add a photo of # 1 at the end of these stories, though it will be almost unrecognizable because he was loved so much and because Boo-Boo Bunny got Ryan through the worst of times in his young life riddled with cancer. #BooBooBunny
